TODAY: 29th September 2018, WORLD HEART DAY
What can we do to look after “MY HEART, YOUR HEART and OUR HEARTS”
Can we start loving our hearts and people with heart?
Can we start making our hearts happy??
Difficult to do in one shot, as we have so much plaque buildup in our system both mind and body, over the years with the extreme life style we have, from the time we are born, we are under stress, pressure and challenges.
Pressure from parents, siblings, family, children, environment, school, exams, neighbors, friends, enemies, media, politics, law and order, verdicts, lifestyle, illness, habits, peer pressure, food, relationship, job, MONEY!!!!
Will this ever end NO!!
BUT, we have to manage our life and LOVE our HEARTS
As we only have one HEART and one LIFE
We don’t have power to change a lot of the things around us, we cannot change our family and the health risks we have acquired already.
But we can take defense, self-defense; I remember asking my friends, who went to learn Karate in the 1970’s, what is the best self-defense!! And we came to the million dollar answer RUN…………
- Take steps to adopt a healthy lifestyle to love your heart and others heart.
- Prevent plaque buildup; this plaque I am talking about is the mixture of fatty substances, including cholesterol and other lipids. Plague grows and this can lower or fully block both blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. It can narrow and harden the arteries and this can be any artery in the body, major cause for a stroke. Plaque can also rupture and cause blood clots that block arteries.
- To Love, to care, listening to music, learning to smile, sharing time with family and friends, travelling, going for movies, cooking, cleaning, shopping, dressing up, enjoying nature, playing with kids, visiting historic places, pilgrimage places, nursery, orphanage, talking to people in need, visiting elderly people, participating in voluntary work, reading, writing, dancing, exercising, sleeping enough, any activity you choose that makes you happy, that helps you prevent buildup of plaque should do you good.
SCREENING
Do regular blood works. At least every 5 years and more often if you have any abnormal levels or increased risks.
Every time I do one I keep asking the doctor for an explanation and the following are general information I have gathered, however please take advice of your medical practitioner for clearing your doubts and apprehensions.
Generally!! This is not a blanket rule but for most people
Total Cholesterol should be less than 200mg/dl
LDL should be less than 100mg/dl. This is the bad cholesterol
HDL should be greater than 40mg/dl. This is the good cholesterol
Triglyceride is another type of fat that keeps going around in the blood. For most people it should be less than 150mg/dl.
High Triglyceride is bad, high risk, this is manufactured in the body from excess calories, which comes from fat, protein or carbohydrate. Triglycerides are made quickly from excess sugar or excess alcohol.
PREVENTION
Avoid use and exposure of tobacco
Keep your blood pressure less than 120 over 80
Do whatever you can to prevent diabetes, if you already have diabetes manage it carefully.
Please do regular exercise, walking, climbing steps, dancing, swimming whatever you can
Reduce saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol in your diet
Understand the symptoms of a heart attack and immediate medical treatment is the key to survival, treatment in the first hour can prevent permanent damage.
