Prevention
When we rebuild Kerala how can we make exercise, health and fitness an integral part of our lifestyle. I know for sure, I don’t have the habit of exercise, dedicated, compulsory exercise on a daily basis. I can work at home or office 24×7 until I fall apart, I can walk miles to get something done for work or for anyone. I can stand for hours, but ask me to exercise to keep myself fit, forget it I am hopelessly, hopeless.
However if I have a friend who wants me to be with them, to make sure he or she needs to exercise as part of a doctors instruction, I am willing to support. But on my own I am not self-motivated to exercise to keep me fit. I do all the house work and keep on doing that day in and day out, and I think I assume that will hold me good.
I want to write about the various advices I have received from doctors, well-wishers, elders who have been concerned about me and my health. Let me put them down for my fellow citizens.
Imagine your body is like a bicycle, a car, anything that revolves or rotates which is dear to you, you need to maintain it. Some needs frequent maintenance, some once in a way. Start with small maintenance, checking tire pressure, oiling a bit, cleaning a bit so on and so forth.
Biggest success is if you can somehow start today, a small step; then a very small goal can be set and we can start working towards that.
The catch is we can only make this decision now when we are fit, when we are sick and incapacitated this decision does not help as much, so let’s just give 30 minutes, slow walk first and then brisk walk, perhaps it’s good to check with your doctor what type of exercise is best for you. Just 30 minutes.
I was told there are four types of exercise
Aerobic, strengthening, flexibility and balance exercises.
Aerobic is endurance or cardiovascular- raising your breathing and heart rate, helps lungs and circulatory system, increases energy to perform better.
Strengthening is using weights generally to strengthen muscles and increase metabolism, more muscles burns more calories
Flexibility by stretching like yoga, lowering your risk of injury
Balance exercise which maintains your balance and lowers risk of falls, again yoga single leg balancing etc.
To be honest we don’t lose anything by being active
I can vouch a few,
Weight is controlled
Less stress and increased self confidence
More energy and stamina
Better flexibility and balance
Better sleep and mood
Lower blood sugar
Lower blood pressure
Relief from chronic pain
Doctor did say
Stronger muscles and joints
More bone mass or less bone loss
Lower risk of cancer
Lower risk of heart disease and stroke
As part of Rebuild Kerala let us create a society that is healthy and prevents avoidable disease by dedicating just 30 minutes daily to start a simple exercise!!!!
