Lekhu was lucky enough to see many movies, she was our shabhdarekha in the class, every Monday, she was in great demand amidst the many who loved the detailed story line. Branded as a tube light of our times, and a flutterby, I never got an opportunity to be part of the club.
Can’t forget the incident when Lekhu had her mother’s friend a Nun visiting her at home. When we were growing up, Priests, Nuns, Ustaads, were all considered to be in a different plane, from a different planet, we believed they were holy bots, destined to serve mankind, to eradicate the never ending problems of human race and they were our wireless link to communicate with God Almighty.
They were given a lot of reverence and importance in our lives.
When the Nun asked Lekhu to sing a song: Lekhu felt so proud and privileged, she didn’t pause to choose the song, being diehard fans of Sharadha, her solo songs were always favorites.
She sang…..
Lekhu saw her Amma disappearing to the kitchen, and didn’t come back until she finished the song. Once the Nun left she asked Lekhu “ didn’t you get any other song to sing to a Nun…????
Poor Lekhu was aghast and asked ..
Amma what went wrong? Did I mess up the Sangathy???
Like the super talented music director from our neck of the woods (Kollam) Sri. Sharath would remind a contestant.
Amma gave up and said there is no use telling you anything.
Yes there was no point telling us anything beyond Sharadha.
We were so naïve our adolescence was filled with our school, friends, songs, and pranks for many. Mathematics, youth festivals, organizing and cleaning Sr. Evangelist’s office room and my bicycle for me!!!! hahaha.
Being the first born, priorities were helping parents, neighbors and relatives, studying, reading, listening to music, participating in activities in church and community.
Even after being cornered many a times about the silky songs of yester years, I still keep singing as much as I can, connect to my childhood and experience the innocence we had in common I can only repeat the lyrics of the great Vayalar
And pray if I get another chance I want to still repeat everything as it was in my childhood and never ever decipher the silky lyrics of our great nostalgic songs and feel shy to sing them, I better be as naïve and stupid..
Lyricist of yester years, created songs for situations, after watching the movie “Thara” I went back to download the songs, and listened in the order as it was played in the movie. The whole script and story line is in the songs. What amazing talents we had as writers.. directors…performers…
They juggled the song of songs, the most expressive language Malayalam and created the most meaningful silky smooth lyrics..
The songs of “Thara” are
